I’ve been wondering which is better for quite sometime especially when news about how Yahoo! might collapse in the near future. So I did a comparison on the services offered by the two giants. Here’s the list that I came out with.

**This list is updated on the 15th of July 2008.**

So there you go. After making this list, I still don’t know why Google is making more money than Yahoo!. I see Yahoo! as an entertainment/leisure or an “everyday” portal. You have all the services that you would need for a home user.

While Google on the other hand is like a place for Geeks (No offense to anyone. Coz I consider myself a Geek too!) Google has all the out of the box applications which most people hardly use. Like Google Earth for example, how often do you use that? Maybe some “pervs” are waiting for the application to be powerful enough to peep into the bedroom window of the girl next block! Or how about sketching a 3D model online…I don’t know when that would come in handy for me…but yeah maybe you could use it to make yourself a 3D avatar for your IM.

I’ve bolded the applications/services that I might use and somehow Yahoo! won in terms of day to day applications.

  1. I love Yahoo’s Cinema info site for Singapore. That’s where I go to check out the best showtimes and plan my dates.
  2. In Singapore, Yahoo! Auctions give better results than EBay.
  3. My web albums are mainly in Flickr. It’s easy to use and cheap.
  4. I still play Yahoo! Pool and Text Twist when I have nothing better to do.
  5. I use the Web Search Engine from time to time when I don’t find what I want in Google. Don’t know why but sometimes Yahoo! gives me my desired results.
  6. I check out most of the news on Yahoo!. Be it entertainment or disasters.

What I use in Google?

  1. Search Engine.
  2. Adwords. I was banned from AdSense…so can’t comment on that.
  3. Google Maps ever since StreetDirectory.com stopped functioning.
  4. Web Analytics.

The other things that I bolded and did not mention in either Yahoo! or Google means I patronize other sites for their services. Like ….

  1. Reference.com for their dictionary and thesaurus .
  2. Paypal for payment gateway and money transfers.
  3. Subvisualshub.com for web hosting and domain registration.
  4. MSN for Instant Messaging services.
  5. I’ll search all over the net to find the best Travel deals. Also will get advices from my trusted friends before making a decision. ;)

Well, Google must have played their cards right I guess. Wondering if Yahoo! could survive much longer…
